Organic of Local?

Recently, i was presented with a dilemma, local or organic? It is peach season in Georgia. I was at the farmers market and saw that they had organic peaches from somewhere and local conventional peaches from Georgia. It was honesty the first time I had every really considered the difference.

Organic:
I may be supporting a company/farmer that has ideals similar to myself.
It is poison free (in theory).
I encourage the market to support organic products.

Local:
The environmental impact of transportation of food would be less (in theory).
I may be supporting a small farmer versus and big company.
I encourage the market to support local products.

I stood there in front of the peach bins for several minutes contemplating. I opted for the local peaches. In part, I just wanted to say I used Georgia Peaches, but the major factor was the cost. The local product was cheaper. Even as I made a tasty morning smoothie with the peaches, I was still considering the difference. I thought I would post my thoughts here and see what the blog-world felt.

Peach Smoothie

3 large peaches (peeled)
1/2 banana
2 cups of apple juice
1 tablespoon of vanilla bean powder
2 teaspoons of lemon juice

In blender, puree all ingredients until smooth. If you do not have vanilla bean powder, you can use a teaspoon of vanilla extract and a tablespoon of sugar. This should make three 8oz glasses.

I almost always go with local over organic if forced to choose. There are so few local farms here, they really need all the support they can get. However, buying locally means there's no sign of peaches here yet!

You have to weigh it up don't you? Do you go for the organic which is probably better for you health wise or do you go for local which is better for the planet and therefore probably better for you in the (very) long run, health wise? And then there's the cost to consider also. I think on balance i would have made the same choice you made.

If faced with your dilemma, I always choose local -- even though there may be slight pesticide residue on the local produce, it is less "poison," most say, than the pollution produced to truck the nonlocal, but organic, produce to me.

Plus, I've learned, most local farmers use few if any pesticides -- they just don't have the $$ to get themselves certified organic.

I choose local whenever I can, even if that means I pay a few cents MORE than the trucked-in stuff!

When it comes to that question...I always choose local. Most local farmers here do not use pesticides; but they're also not willing to pay for organic certification. Just because it's not certified doesn't mean it's necessarily conventional. I will always support my community before I support somewhere else. :)

I try to do organic but will usually go local. Sometimes I just can't afford the organic and if it comes down to only buying organic or not having a fresh peach the whole summer well...it's not a hard choice! I've never been to Georgia but would love to have a real Georgia peach :-) My niece lives there so hopefully some day...
